Chinese Imports Worry Vendors & Consumers Alike
Fact: 60% Of All U.S. Products Recalled in the First Half of 2007 were from China.1
Fact: The United States imports 40% of all consumer products from China.2
For years China has denied that its exported products are tainted, faulty or even deadly. However, after lead paint was discovered in children's toys and brake fluid and antifreeze found in toothpaste, both Vendors and Consumers alike have become weary of purchasing Chinese products. In more industrial applications, items as common as plugs, wiring and coating paints have been found to have lead. Even Chinese stainless steel has been questioned as to the purity of its metal alloys and composition.
Perhaps more troubling than the denials is how the Chinese Government has handled some of these incidences. For example, last summer, in response to the discovery that the head of of China's Food & Drug agency was accepting bribes to speed drug approvals, the Chinese government had the man executed.
Along with consumers, businesses should realize that outsourcing to China requires much more scrutiny than in the past and an "initial" lower price can be much higher if there are any recalls or the business receives a "bad" batch.
The Pure Equipment Shield of Integrity
The Pure Equipment Shield of Integrity attempts to raise safety for both consumers and vendors alike by raising standards and requiring members to attest to the "purity" of their products and that they are specifically free from lead. For example, it is good for consumers to know that when they purchase a melting tank, that it does not have lead paint in its coating or lead mixed into its aluminum or stainless steel structure which can enter into mixtures used by consumers. When a vendor purchases candle wicks, coloring or scents for candle making, that they do not contain any lead. The same would apply to soap makers, lotion, health and beauty products and cosmetic vendors and suppliers.
Before being able to display a Pure Equipment Shield of Integrity, a vendor must examine all the supplies, equipment and products they use in production and any items or products that they make available for purchase to ensure that they are specifically free from lead. Instead of requiring companies to physically send all their products to us for analysis, we believe that vendors should know their products better, be concerned about their products and customers and should be dedicated to producing a safe product. After a company has completed this examination, then it must Attest to the examination and commit to never using lead in its products. When you see the Pure Equipment Shield of Integrity you can be sure the company has Attested that it has examined its products and is committed to never using lead in its products.
PESHIELD.COM does not actually test any product, approve or endorse any product or company. While this is not a perfect system and in an ideal world all products and supplies and companies would be examined for safety and that everything is Pure Equipment and free of lead, PESHIELD.COM believes it is the first step in a long term process and better than inaction. For this reason, when you see the Pure Equipment Shield of Integrity it means only that the company has Attested that it has examined its products and is committed to never using lead in its products. You should still exercise reasonable care and judgment when selecting and purchasing any product from any company. Safety responsibilities remain entirely with consumers, company, vendors and suppliers.
